Is Pellet Heating Right for You?

03/01/2024

If you don't have access to natural gas and currently use solid fuel, wood, or coal for central heating, but you're considering switching to a more efficient system, pellet heating is an ideal solution for you.

When planning to change your heating system, there are many uncertainties, from costs, storage, and maintenance, to the quality of the fuel. In the search for the most efficient solution, there are many questions, and here are the answers to some of them.

What is Pellet?

Pellet is a type of fuel created through a technological process of grinding, drying, and compressing wood mass like sawdust and wood chips or other “bio” materials. Depending on the manufacturer, it can be made from beech, oak, pine, or a mixture of different types of wood. During compression under high pressure, the temperature of the wood rises, releasing natural glue within the wood mass, so no additional chemicals are needed for binding. Thanks to its purity, this type of fuel also preserves the boiler or stove where it burns, making pellet heating an environmentally friendly option that protects the natural environment.

Wood pellets are most commonly used, releasing more heat when burned than logs of the same wood from which the pellets are made.

An Eco-Friendly Solution

Pellets are a renewable and inexhaustible energy source, so you don't have to worry about running out one day. Pellets are produced in almost every country worldwide, reducing dependency on distant nations that are major producers of other energy sources.

Agro-pellets, made from residues of annual plants, release as much carbon dioxide during combustion as the plant absorbed during its life through photosynthesis. Similarly, burning wood pellets releases the multi-year absorbed amount of carbon dioxide, but it is still much more acceptable than using fossil fuels.

Cleaner Heating than Coal

A pellet boiler emits significantly less smoke than coal boilers. During the start-up of the stove and heating of the pellets, a minimal amount of smoke is released, but once the stove is running, no more smoke is produced.

After burning pellets in the stove, even 100 times less ash (about 1%) remains compared to the residue from burning wood, or even 33 times less (about 3%) compared to agro-pellets.

Control of Operation and Consumption

Unlike solid fuels, where a large amount of heat escapes through the chimney, pellet heating can be controlled and adjusted to your needs. The Bergen TRIUMPH series boilers offer the option to connect to a room thermostat, allowing you to set the heating mode or the time for the burner to turn on and off. The boiler gradually increases power as needed, providing long-term heating cost reductions on an annual basis.

It also features a multi-protection system that regulates temperature, pressure in the boiler and installations, and the temperature of flue gases. If needed, it automatically activates and shuts off, making pellet heating with the Bergen TRIUMPH boiler a safe solution.

Saves Time, Space, and Money

Unlike wood or coal stoves, regular stoking is not necessary. Pellet stoves have an integrated reservoir that can be filled for 3 to 7 days, depending on the boiler's characteristics and the outside temperature.

Pellet heating is a convenient form of heating, not just because it saves time in preparation but also because it saves space. Pellets are packed in 15kg bags, and storage space required is up to four times smaller compared to other solid fuels (650kg/m³).

The performance of the boiler, its reliability, level of cleanliness, and the amount of ash depend on the type and quality of pellets. When purchasing fuel, pay attention to whether the seller has a certificate, whether the bag lists the composition, and other specifications like granule dimensions and moisture percentage.

Bags should contain as little dust as possible. When the pellet is of good quality, there is almost no dust. The granules themselves must be smooth and smell of wood, not chemicals.

Pellet production is standardized in terms of conditions, and even the appearance of pellets is strictly defined—the diameter is 6mm, the length is 30mm, and the moisture content must be below 10%.

Pellet heating produces more heat than wood or coal heating, ensuring you'll save money. The innovative technological solution of the TRIUMPH pellet boiler provides long-term heating cost reductions on an annual basis.

The Initial Investment – Pellet Boiler

This heating system requires a special pellet boiler connected to the existing system, making this solution most attractive for households that already have a central heating system with a wood or coal boiler, as such a boiler can easily be replaced with one that uses pellets. TRIUMPH boilers have a built-in ceramic heater that allows for quick ignition. All boiler elements are made of high-quality materials, in compliance with high ecological and safety European standards, ensuring energy efficiency, reliability, and a long service life. Additionally, they come with a 5-year warranty on leakage and a standard 2-year product warranty.

Besides purchasing a new one, you can also "upgrade" your existing boiler by adding a pellet burner. This means a special burner is installed on the door of a solid fuel boiler, allowing pellets to burn in the existing boiler. This system offers all the advantages of a classic pellet boiler. However, how effective this solution will be depends on the condition of the existing boiler, so it is important to consult with our experts to choose the right and cost-effective solution.
