Underfloor heating – a choice for a healthier atmosphere

02/01/2024

Underfloor heating has become increasingly popular in recent years when it comes to central heating systems, though it is by no means a new invention. In fact, this heating method was used by the ancient Romans, who circulated heated air through pipes that ran beneath the floors of their villas and public baths. They already understood what we confirm today—that underfloor heating is a system that offers a luxurious feeling of warmth throughout the space in an energy-efficient and healthy way.

Underfloor heating is classified as a low-temperature heating system, with floor temperatures ranging between 21°C and 28°C, depending on the room’s purpose. This type of heating system is cost-effective and also benefits health by preventing excessive drying of the mucous membranes and increasing overall comfort.

How Does Underfloor Heating Work?

Underfloor heating works by circulating warm water through a series of continuous loops fixed beneath the floor, creating a large heating surface that warms the room from the ground up. Simply put, in this system, the entire floor becomes a unified heating element. This form of heating, which sends heat from the floor to the ceiling, provides almost ideal heating conditions and is much more comfortable than the convective heat provided by radiators.

Advantages of Underfloor Heating

Energy Efficiency

In traditional radiator systems, water must be heated to temperatures between 65-75°C to effectively warm the rooms, while underfloor heating requires a temperature of just 28°C or less, depending on the type of flooring. With underfloor heating, the same feeling of warmth is achieved when the average room temperature is 1-2°C lower than with radiator heating, leading to energy savings of around 6-12%. Additionally, heat losses during ventilation are smaller compared to rooms where heating elements are placed beneath windows.

Moreover, radiators first heat the air closest to them, resulting in so-called cold spots in the room—air is cooler in the center while being very warm near the radiators. Unlike radiators, underfloor heating provides warmth from floor to ceiling without cold spots or stuffiness in the heated space.

Simple and Safe to Use

Once underfloor heating is installed, it requires almost no maintenance. Controllers allow the heating system to operate in the most efficient manner and let you adjust the room temperature to your needs. The thermostat is located on the room's wall, perhaps next to the light switch, and the heating system is invisible and does not take up any space.

Positive Impact on Human Health

Radiant heat reduces dust and humidity in the air, alleviating allergic reactions and respiratory irritations. The large heating surface and low temperature provided by underfloor heating ensure a slower air temperature exchange, preventing the raising of dust from the floor regardless of the type of flooring. Additionally, due to its construction and the fact that the installation is located in the floor, there are no hard-to-reach places for cleaning, meaning there is no accumulation of dust and allergens.
